What is a trullo?

When you think about Puglia, you visualize its unique culture, some amazing beaches, old olive trees ... and its trulli. But what is it really?

The trullo is one the most famous symbols of Puglia. It's a traditional type of limestone dwelling found in the Apulia region of southern Italy, particularly in the area known as the Valle d'Itria.

Trulli (plural form of trullo) are characterized by their distinctive conical roofs, which are made by stacking corbelled limestone slabs without the use of mortar.

Trulli were historically used as homes or farmhouses, and they have become iconic symbols of the Apulian landscape. The design of trulli is believed to have originated in the 14th century, and they were initially built as temporary structures that could be easily dismantled to avoid taxation. However, they evolved into permanent homes and agricultural buildings over time.

The construction of trulli is unique and skillful. The walls are made of limestone blocks, and the overlapping stone slabs of the conical roof gradually decrease in size as they approach the top. The roofs often feature decorative pinnacles called "pinnacoli." The interiors of trulli are characterized by their coolness and simplicity, with stone floors and whitewashed walls.

Where are they?

They are mostly found in the Vale d'Itria (Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Ceglie Messapica) but also in its periphery.

The town of Alberobello in Apulia is particularly famous for its large concentration of trulli, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Why are they famous?

First because they are unique.

Then, trulli are now sought after for their architectural charm and their potential to be easily restored and converted into private houses or holiday accommodations.

They offer some typical and traditional elements that could be easily mixed with a modern twist, thanks to their simplicity.

If you are looking for a trullo, we'd be happy to support you.
